    CRCHI Multi-mode TBM Breaks Through After Boring Under The Qiantang River

    On May 12, 2020, a CRCHI 6.48 m diameter multi-mode TBM (EPB and Slurry) slowly entered into a station after it finished boring through the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, China. The TBM excavated a cross-river double-track tunnel, a part of section from the Civic Center Station to the Olympic Station for Phase SG7-3 of Hangzhou Metro Line 7. It is the first time for a CRCHI multi-mode TBM to be successfully applied in the East China region.

It is the first time for a CRCHI multi-mode TBM to be successfully applied in the East China region.

    To solve the geological difficulties, this CRCHI TBM was designed to combine the two basic soft ground technologies in one and the same machine. The machine adopted the EPB mode when it drove in the silty clay stratum as the EPB mode would assure superior muck discharge capability and high efficiency excavation. The TBM switched to the Slurry mode when it bored under the river which featured rich water content, strong water permeability and high groundwater pressure as the Slurry mode would guarantee high stability on the tunnel face. Therefore, for the project, the multi-mode TBM obviously excels a Slurry TBM as it has high geological adaptability, fast mode switch, complete system functions, economy, eco-friendly property and other advantages.   

    Since the TBM launched in June of 2019, it has created national records of advancing 24 m in one day and 360 m in one month. It took the contractor using CRCHI TBM eleven month to excavate a 2320-m tunnel. 

    Having faced many challenges like construction with high risks and tight construction schedule during drive, the CRCHI service team strictly followed scientific guidance, put emphasis on how to overcome construction difficulties, worked out a series of emergency plans to increase advance rate and on-site service quality and annually analyzed construction data to ensure everything was under control. In addition, it is the contractor team who put a lot of efforts that ensured a fast, reliable and safe tunnelling.
